Check into a hotel in Port aux Basques after
sailing from Sydney, Nova Scotia on the ferry.
A great way to get into the spirit of things is
to hunker down in St. Christopher's Hotel
restaurant for a hearty dish such as cod au
gratin or moose meatball pasta with wild
mushroom sauce. The chef here is known
for turning out innovative meals with a
Newfoundland flair.
To get a taste for Western Newfoundland's
culture and lifestyle, take Route 470 and head
east along the bottom part of the province.
This 28-mile (45-km) stretch is filled
with unusual rock formations, mossy
terrain and wee ponds. Step back in
time by visiting endearing villages such
as Burnt Islands, Isle aux Morts, and
Rose Blanche. Each village has colour-
ful homes, short trails and stunning
vistas including the one at Rose
Blanche Lighthouse. Made of granite,
this 19
th
century lighthouse is truly
one-of-a-kind.
The best way to get the full flavour
of the Codroy Valley (20 minutes north
of Port aux Baseques on Trans-Canada
Highway 1) is to make a loop on Routes
406 and 407. Be sure to drive all the
way to Cape Anguille Lighthouse. En
route, strike up conversations with the
locals! They love to share insider tips,
such as where the best hiking trails are
and how to find Hidden Falls. Codroy
Valley also has great birding sites. Find
out more at the Wetland Interpretation
Centre and the Grand Codroy Wildlife
Museum and Nature Park (www.
