W ant to cast your cares to the wind? Relax, smile, and laugh a lot? Be spellbound by scen- ery or mesmerized by whales, moose and towering icebergs? It's all here in Western Newfoundland— everything from colourful outports to majestic fjords. Take in a culture that wraps itself around you like a cherished blanket and you have the perfect place to visit. Hugging the western coastline 424 miles (683 km) from Port aux Basques to St. Anthony, Western Newfoundland boasts a number of superlatives: L'Anse aux Meadows National Historic Site (the old- est authenticated Viking settlement in North America), Gros Morne National Park (a UNESCO World Heritage Site) and "Iceberg Alley," to name just a few. Although there are ample services, facilities, and attractions throughout Western Newfoundland—even a savvy city—there is very little commercialism. What you will find, however, is a place where people have big hearts and a wick- ed sense of humour. Newfoundlanders love to sing, dance and churn out toe-tap- ping tunes. And they love to eat! Imagine Western Newfoundland—wondrous! By SAndrA PhinnEy 158 2012 TRAVEL GUIDE TO CANADA NewfouNdlaNd & labrador
