You are bewildered by the sight of false-front stores along the boardwalk that give you the impression that you've just stepped out onto the streets of a true frontier town. The sun hasn't yet set but folks still throng the dusty streets of the town that was ground zero for the Klondike Gold Rush. You are experiencing the town that never sleeps. NIGHT OWLS Start your evening with dinner. Nouvelle cuisine, Greek, local game and catch of the day. Dawson is no frontier outpost when it comes to dining options. Then join an infamous club. Step up to the bar at the Downtown Hotel—a saloon that could be a set piece for a cow- boy movie and order a Sourtoe Cocktail (www.sourtoecocktailclub.com). It's a popular tradition here. Sip your favourite libation while ensuring the mummified toe floating in the glass touches your lips. Now all you have to do is sign the Sourtoe Log Book and receive an official Sourtoe Cocktail Club membership certificate. Then it's on to Diamond Tooth Gerties Gambling Hall (www.dawsoncity.ca/ klondikeattractions/diamondtooth gerties), Canada's oldest gambling estab- lishment. The saloon's evening shows fea- ture vivacious can-can girls and variety acts. Try your hand at blackjack. Still got some stamina? Bop to the band at Bombay Peggy's Inn & Pub (www. bombaypeggys.com), a B&B housed in a restored Victorian brothel. Are you ready for a nightcap? Head to Dawson's famous bar—the Snake Pit—housed in the circa 1898 Westminster Hotel. Better save some energy for seeing the daytime sights tomorrow. DAYTIMERS Dawson City with its period architecture and recreated buildings is every bit as appealing by day as it is by night. Take the guided walking tour and check out the Post Office and the Red Feather Saloon. Get a helping of history from an inter- preter in period costume. Literature buffs will want to take in a poetry reading featuring the work by Robert Service, the "Bard of the Yukon," outside his cabin (www.dawsoncity.ca/ klondikeattractions/parkscanada historicalsites). Just across the street is Canadian author Pierre Berton's first house. Down the street you'll find the rebuilt cabin of American journalist Jack DAWSON CITY • YK TOURISM 172 2012 TRAVEL GUIDE TO CANADA YUKON TERRITORY
