TRAVEL GUIDE TO CANADA If the Cold War piques your interest, take a quick drive out to the village of Carp to visit the Diefenbunker museum. This four-storey underground hideout, which opened in 1961, was designed to shelter Canada's leaders during a nuclear attack. The decommissioned facility—a fascinating time capsule of rotary-dial phones and melamine furniture—now hosts clever events such as interactive zombie adventures. The Canada Science and Technology Museum is undergoing an extensive $80.5-million renovation and is scheduled to reopen in late 2017. GREAT COMMEMORATIONS One of the city's landmark hotels, the Lord Elgin, is marking its 75 th anniversary this year with a slate of special events and activities, including a gala in February and a $12-million renovation beginning in June. The region is also preparing eagerly to play a central role in the nationwide celebration of Canada's 150 th birthday in 2017, with a packed year of celebrations beginning on December 31 (www.ottawa2017.ca). BE A SPORT Root for the home team! Ottawa is a great place for fans of team sports: the Ottawa Senators of the National Hockey League; junior hockey's Ottawa 67's; the Canadian Football League's Ottawa REDBLACKS (who vied for the 2015 Grey Cup); Ottawa Fury FC (pro soccer—or, for non-North Americans, football); and double-A baseball's Ottawa Champions. The REDBLACKS, Fury and 67's all play at Lansdowne Park. If you'd rather get active than simply cheer, sign up for events such as the Tamarack Ottawa Race Weekend (May 28 and 29) or the HOPE Volleyball SummerFest (July 16). On the fringes of the region, you can hike, camp, snowshoe, or cross-country or downhill ski in vast Gatineau Park. Several companies, includ- ing RiverRun Rafting, Wilderness Tours and OWL Rafting, offer whitewater rafting trips on the Ottawa River that range from relatively sedate outings for novices to challenging trips through serious rapids. With a whole region to explore, you'll never run out of things to do. More inforMation For travel information about the Capital, contact Ottawa Tourism (www.ottawa tourism.ca).
