n 1972, the United Nations
Educational, Scientifi c and Cultural
Organization (UNESCO) estab-
lished, and continues to update, a
published list of cultural and natural
heritage properties around the world
considered to be of outstanding universal
value to humanity. The goal is to encour-
age the preservation of the identifi ed
properties both at a local and international
level.
Entry and service fees are charged at
most national parks and national historic
sites, where the revenues are kept to
support visitor services and facilities. This
means that every time you visit a park or
site you are investing in its future—and in
a legacy for future generations.
