LISA MOSES Eeyou Istchee Baie-James: Deep in the Heart of Québec NORTHERN LIGHTS • MATHIEU DUPUIS VANLIFE MTL IN EEYOU ISTCHEE BAIE-JAMES The Cree Nation of the Eeyou Istchee Baie-James has provided rare visitor experiences for centuries. Today, the Cree and non-Cree (Jamesians) craft authentic adventures that satisfy cravings for exhilarating nature and uplifting heritage, all while ensuring creature comforts. North of the 49 th parallel, this region is populated by Cree communities and guides who know the territory like no one else. On safe, sizeable boats, local Cree captains will take visitors around the coastal islands to spot polar bears, beluga whales, caribou, seals and migratory birds. A favourite stop is Trodely Island, home to the world's southernmost population of polar bears. Other magnets include sport fishing and visiting hydroelectric facili- ties. Winter is ideal for snowmobiling and snowshoeing. Cultural experiences are offered with tours of the Aanischaaukamikw Cree Cultural Institute, a guided forest excursion at FaunENord (nature interpretation services) or a tasting tour at a local microbrewery. Area events range from powwows and wellness workshops to festivals that celebrate music, art and various lifestyles. In addition to traditional hotel rooms, guests will find unique wilderness accommodations. How about a well- appointed floating cabin on magnificent Lake Waconichi? While the region is readily accessible by road, Air Creebec can shorten the trip from Val-D'Or, Chibougamau or Montréal. Both scheduled and charter flights to Eeyou Istchee communities are offered (www.escapelikeneverbefore.com).
